Pulsatile Tinnitus

Have you ever heard your own heart beat through a stethoscope? Well if you haven’t it is pretty loud and clear through one. It is not loud enough to hurt your ears but if you have pulsatile tinnitus that does hurt.

What’s Pulsating Tinnitus and is there a Tinnitus Treatment ?

Pulsatile Tinnitus is a form of the ringing in the ear that many Americans from the ages of 40-50 seem to have as they age. Most people are not very clear on all the causes of tinnitus except that it’s practically impossible to cure. Don’t lose hope though you are not alone. Pulsatile tinnitus is a ringing sound that only you yourself can hear in absence with all other real life noises around. In simple terms, it’s could be a pulsating sound of your pulse, heartbeat, or even your blood flowing. Some people get it constantly the luckier ones hear it once in a while. This is not very easy to treat because in order to treat pulsatile tinnitus, you’d need to first visit your doctor and figure out the exact cause. Research shows many times over that each person varies with different causes.

Causes of Pulsating Tinnitus:
There are generally four categories of causes:
1) Arterial Sounds – AVMs are abnormal collections of arteries and veins that sometimes occur within the cranial cavity near the auditory nerve. AVM pulsation against the auditory nerve stimulates the nerve, resulting in a pulsating tinnitus.
2) Venous Sounds – includes people who are pregnant, anemic, or have thyroid problem develop an increase in blood flow in their jugular. The jugular is the largest vein that carries blood from the brain back to the heart.
3) Benign or Malignant Tumors – this is most commonly referred to as glomus tumors or paragangliomas. The are benign but are difficult and surgery is required to correct this.
4) Spasm of Middle Ear Muscles – The middle ear is normally an air-filled space. If, due to infection, inflammation or eustachian tube dysfunction, fluid accumulates behind the middle ear then pulsating tinnitus may result.
To diagnose the cause of your pulsatile tinnitus, you’ll most like need imaging of the vascular system of the head and neck done.
