Ginkgo Biloba became popular in the late 80′s and early 90′s due to the belief that it could enhance memory. Many other positive health benefits associated with using ginkgo biloba as a health supplement. As one of the oldest living tree species, Ginkgo Biloba remains the most extensively studied herb today. Besides from enhancing memory, it is used widely to treat blood disorders. In addition, patients have reported that using ginkgo biloba can have positive effects on tinnitus symptoms. The reason may lay in the increase of blood flow.

Ginkgo biloba consists of more than 40 components from the ginkgo tree, however there are two that are believed to have medical value: flavonoids and terpenoids. Flavonoids are antioxidants that are shown in laboratory studies to benefit the body in many ways. These include protection of the heart muscle, nerves, blood vessels, and retina from damage. Ginkgolides, a member of the ginkgolides have the effect of improving blood flow by reducing the adhesiveness of platelets and dilating blood vessels.

Many patients believe that the effect that Ginkgo Biloba has on improving one’s blood flow may alleviate the painful effects of tinnitus. The origin of a person’s tinnitus symptoms are a large contributing factor in determining the effects of the herbal supplement. Many try this homeopathic solution because it is so readily available and you can get it at any drug store without a prescription.

Reviewing the labels of many homeopathic relief solutions you will find that they contain ginkgo biloba. Below is the nutrition facts of Tinnitus Control, a popular all-natural OTC remedy:

It is very difficult to give a tinnitus treatment that will work for everyone because of the numerous underlying conditions and health issues that can be the cause for an individual’s tinnitus. Taking the herbal supplement has not shown any negative effects on the body nor have researchers been able to find an increase in tinnitus symptoms as a direct result from taking it.

Since the positive effects that ginkgo biloba has on the blood stream, it can be concluded that using the herbal remedy can have positive effects on treating tinnitus.

Although tinnitus sufferers have not been scientifically tested against this assumption many marijuana users have complained of their tinnitus symptoms getting worse. The underlying symptoms of tinnitus are probably not disturbed by smoking marijuana, however, due to the nature of the drug users report the side effect of enhancing sounds which would make the ringing sound more noticeable.

It is recommended to refrain from smoking marijuana while suffering from tinnitus because of the drugs ability to strengthen or increase any phantom noise. These side effects do vary from individual to individual so there is no guarantee that this will make the ringing more noticeable.

Note that also small samples of marijuana users have reported a reduction in the ringing noise. Although no official scientific research has been done, there have been claims from both patients who have found marijuana smoking to alleviate their tinnitus symptoms and patients who have found the practice result in an increase of tinnitus discomfort.

Presently, tinnitus is not considered a valid reason for the prescription of medical marijuana where the drug is legalized. In conclusion, how a person reacts to tinnitus with the use of marijuana is largely dependent on many factors including how that individual developed it to begin with.

If you’re reading this right now, your probably asking yourself the same question my previous readers have ask themselves also. What is Meniere’s disease?

A common misunderstanding is that Meniere’s disease is tinnitus. Yet quite the contrary. Tinnitus is just one characteristic of Meniere’s disease. This disease is a disorder of the inner ear that can affect not only your hearing but your balance as well. What do you mean balance? When I say balance, I mean a classic episode attack of vertigo or dizziness. Finally, having a “classic” case of Meniere’s disease we would expect the patient to have a progressive loss of hearing usually in just one ear.

What causes this?

The exact cause is still unknown but you can read more on this under my section for : Causes

Tinnitus can be caused by multiple factors. However, there are so many ears ringing treatment options nowadays, that a promise of relief is a definite possibility. The basic need for a successful treatment is the right diagnosis, as unless the right cause is identified, an ears ringing treatment will likely never be truly successful. A complete medical examination complete with all required tests will assist in locating the exact origin of the problem. When you start feeling strong symptoms of tinnitus, there are several diagnostic tools to identify the cause. These will help enable the doctor to prescribe the right ear ringing treatment.

Certain important diagnostic styles as part of ear ringing treatment include:

1.An audiogram test is conducted to almost all patients suffering from tinnitus, where patterns of hearing loss are studied.

2.An Auditory Brain Stem Response (ABR) test is performed where all the hearing nerves and their brain pathways are carefully examined.

3. A CT (Computer Tomography) scan or a MRI (Magnetic Resonant Imaging) scan is performed to check the possibility of presence of any tumors in the hearing nerve though the occurrence is very rare. A similar scan is used to check the inner ear parts as well.

A variety of ears ringing treatment methods are followed to cure tinnitus after ascertaining the right cause of the problem. Resulting in ears ringing treatments that are based on treating the cause. The treatment is essentially over once the major cause of ear ringing is rectified.

Treating Stress & Anxiety Ear ringing treatments often treat stress first. A person, who is under stress is likely to worsen the pain and ringing. Therefore, it is important to give required medications to the patient to quickly lower the stress levels, which in turn reduces the chances of ear ringing. In an effort to relieve the problems, anti depressant meds are administered to sufferers. Certain patients are administered mild doses of anti-depressant medicines, usually for about 10 to 12 days, which reduces the problem.

Ear ringing treatments are next focused to cure the problems within the ear, which cause tinnitus. The problem of wax and swelling can cause ringing of the ears in many people. Sometimes, infection in the inner fluid and membranes also cause tinnitus, which can be cured using antibiotics and ear drops. As well, the problems in the middle ear, due to improper motion of middle ear bones can also lead to the development of tinnitus, which can be rectified using appropriate medications. Surgical methods In very rare cases, tinnitus occurs due to formation of benign tumors in the brain. This condition is called neuroma, which is treated by surgery. The surgery is performed to remove the entire tumor and cure the problem of tinnitus forever.

Normally, tinnitus occurs due to infection in the ears. This infection is diagnosed as the primary cause of ear ringing. These ear infections, either internal or external, are remedied with all sorts of antibiotics and medicines. Sometimes, anti epileptic drugs are also used to treat tinnitus. Apart from this, the patient is checked whether he/she is supplemented with any ototoxic medicines for some other medical problem. Ototoxic medicines are certain antibiotics, amino glycosides, salicylates, quinines, erythromycin, vancomycin, and diuretics, which give a negative effect to the cochlea and other vestibular make ups of the inner ear. Once these medications are stopped or altered with substitutes, tinnitus gradually reduces and stops.

Many people have had success with natural or homeopathic methods, and it’s suggested that these methods be tried as early as possible in the process. Though they don’t all have a 100% success rate, there is certainly no harm in applying these methods. To summarize, there are as many ears ringing treatments available, as there are causes of tinnitus. Getting it diagnosed correctly is the key, in order to get the appropriate ears ringing treatment.

“I have a ringing in the ears but I don’t know what it is. Do you have any ideas?”

Dear Reader:

This could be a condition called tinnitus (ti-NIGHT-us), a common problem that affects nearly 50 million Americans. Here’s what you should know.

Tinnitus is the sensation of hearing a ringing, buzzing, roaring, hissing or whistling sound in one or both ears when no external sound is present. The sounds, which can vary in pitch and loudness, are usually worse when background noise is low, so you may be most aware of it at night when you’re trying to fall asleep in a quiet room. For most people tinnitus is merely annoying, but for many others it can be extremely disturbing.

Causes: It’s important to know that tinnitus is not a disease, but a symptom that can be caused by a variety of medical conditions. The best way to find out what’s causing your tinnitus is to get a complete physical examination, including a thorough hearing test. The various things that can cause tinnitus are:

• Age: The natural process of aging can result in damaged or deteriorated auditory cells in the inner ear causing hearing loss – leading to tinnitus. This process usually begins around age 60.

• Loud noise: The most common cause of tinnitus and hearing loss is exposure to loud noises. In fact about 90 percent of all tinnitus patients have some level of noise-induced hearing loss.

• Earwax: A build-up of wax deep in the ear canal can cause temporary tinnitus and hearing loss. Have your ears checked and if necessary, cleaned.

• Medication: Over 200 different drugs can cause ringing ears, including aspirin – especially when taken in high doses. For a list of drugs that can cause tinnitus call the American Tinnitus Association at (800) 634-8978.

• Medical conditions: Various medical conditions can also cause tinnitus such as high blood pressure, vascular disease, allergies, thyroid problems, ear or sinus infections, Meniere’s disease, otosclerosis, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome, a tumor, an injury to the head or neck and more.

Treating tinnitus: While there’s currently no cure for tinnitus there are some ways to treat it, depending on the cause. For example if your tinnitus is caused by a medical condition (high blood pressure, thyroid problems, etc.) treating the condition may reduce or eliminate the noise. Or, if you think a medication you’re taking may be causing the problem, switching to a different drug, or lowering the dosage may provide some relief. But, if the noise in your ears is due to age-related hearing loss or damage to your ears by exposure to excessive noise – there is no treatment. There is however some things you can do to reduce the severity of the noise, including:

• Avoiding irritants: Tinnitus can be aggravated by loud noises, nicotine, caffeine, tonic water, alcohol and various medications.

• Cover the noise: In a quiet setting, a fan, soft music or a white noise machine can help mask the noise from tinnitus. For some people, tinnitus maskers (a device that looks like a hearing aid) that produce a pleasant noise may also help.

• Hearing aid relief: If your tinnitus is accompanied by hearing loss, hearing aids can amplify outside sounds, making the tinnitus noise less obvious.

• Stress management: Stress can make tinnitus worse. Stress management, whether through relaxation therapy, biofeedback or exercise, may provide some relief.
Savvy tips: While there’s currently no drugs approved by the FDA to treat tinnitus, anti-anxiety drugs, antidepressants and antihistamines have been known to help. Alternative treatments like ginkgo biloba, zinc, magnesium and acupuncture are also worth looking into. Another option to consider is tinnitus retraining therapy, which can help you retrain your mind to ignore the noise. As always, talk to your doctor before trying any new treatments.
